Touch Releases New Album from Jana Winderen

Touch Releases New Album from Jana Winderen

Touch has released the newest album from Jana Winderen. It’s entitled Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone and was commissioned by Sonic Acts's Dark Ecology. It was initially premiered as a 7-channel installation at the Sonic Acts festival and has now come to CD. The description for the album is as follows:

The marginal ice zone is the dynamic border between the open sea and the sea ice, which is ecologically extremely vulnerable. The phytoplankton present in the sea produces half of the oxygen on the planet. During spring, this zone is the most important CO2 sink in our biosphere. In Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone the sounds of the living creatures become a voice in the current political debate concerning the official definition of the location of the ice edge.

The listener experiences the bloom of plankton, the shifting and crackling sea ice in the Barents Sea around Spitsbergen, towards the North Pole, and the underwater sounds made by bearded seals, migrating species such as humpbacks and orcas, and the sound made by hunting saithe, crustaceans and spawning cod, all depending on the spring bloom.

You can find more information about the album on Touch’s website here. The album can also be purchased on the same page. Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone will also be released on Jana Winderen’s Bandcamp page here. It will officially be released through that outlet on November 9th.

Tone Glow Launches New Film Review Section

Tone Glow Launches New Film Review Section

Starting today, Tone Glow is dedicating a section of its site to film reviews. Readers can expect coverage to be limited to contemporary films that are not receiving wide release and are primarily viewed at festivals around the world. Given the homogenization of film coverage across major publications, Tone Glow finds it beneficial to devote writing towards these lesser known films. Three film reviews have been published today: Johann Lurf's , Helena Wittmann’s Drift, and Aminatou Echard's Jamila. Extensive coverage of the 52nd Chicago International Film Festival will also appear soon.

Those who are interested in reviewing films for the site can contact Tone Glow at toneglow@gmail.com. Please send examples of your writing in the email. Those who are accepted will be given access to screeners for films they are interested in reviewing. You will get paid per review.

Nomad Exquisite Releases New Works by A.F. Jones and Seth Cooke

Nomad Exquisite is a recently started Chicago-based label that is committed to releasing short-form pieces from experimental artists. All releases will not exceed 13 minutes in total. These “miniatures” are “prompted by the brevity of life” and aim to provide a survey of contemporary experimental music.

The label has just put up two new releases, one of which is by A.F. Jones and the other by Seth Cooke. Jones’s piece is entitled larkspur, iron filings and was birthed from a period of change and uncertainty. He views the piece, however, as optimistic. A working out and working through of circumstances that have a final resolve. You can stream the album above and purchase it via the album’s Bandcamp page here.

Cooke’s release is entitled The Slip and features six tracks that all last two minutes and four seconds. The description for the album features numerous quotes that are derived from various sources. You can stream the album above and purchase it via its Bandcamp page here.

Earlier this year, Nomad Exquisite released four other miniatures. You can view the label’s entire catalogue here.

Room40 to Release New Collaborative Album from Akio Suzuki & Aki Onda

Room40 to Release New Collaborative Album from Akio Suzuki & Aki Onda

Room40 are set to release a new album from Akio Suzuki & Aki Onda next week on November 2nd. The album is entitled Ke I Te Ki and features three tracks that were recorded in 2015 at The Emily Harvey Foundation. This marks the duo’s first release since their collaborative album ma ta ta bi in 2014 on Oral. In Japanese, the title of this new album refers to the sound of an alarm and was suggested by Akio Suzuki as a reminder for the two to continue pushing themselves further, questioning norms and exploring new possibilities.

Aki Onda described the album as such:

My role was to set an assortment of “scenes” with field recordings, sustained drones generated by an industrial electric fan, and electronic tones and pulses from radios, et cetera. Akio then built upon these with layers of melodies and rhythmic patterns, while we both engaged in fabricating distinctive texture and timbre. Akio kept changing his instruments—such as the Analapos, the stone flute, discarded objects, et cetera—bringing surprises and sudden changes, creating contrast and powerful tension.

You can stream the first, titular track above via the label’s Bandcamp page. Pre-orders for the digital album and the physical CD are also available on the same page.
